Biometrics

What are biometrics?

Biometrics refer to technologies which verify identity using unique physical or behavioural characteristics. These characteristics include fingerprints, facial recognition, voice patterns, or iris scans.

How are biometrics used in payments?

Biometric authentication confirms a user’s identity before approving payments. Smartphones often require fingerprint or facial recognition before authorising mobile wallet transactions or banking app payments.

Why do payment systems use biometrics?

Biometrics increase security by linking authentication to unique personal features. Unlike passwords, biometric identifiers are difficult to replicate or share. This reduces fraud risks during digital payments.

What types of biometric authentication exist?

Common biometric methods include:

• Fingerprint recognition

• Facial recognition

• Voice recognition

• Iris scanning

Are biometric payments secure?

Biometric systems use encrypted storage and device based security modules to protect biometric data. Many systems store biometric templates locally on the user device rather than central servers.
