Card Regulations

What are card regulations?

Card regulations refer to the rules, standards, and compliance requirements which govern how payment cards are issued, processed, and secured. These regulations ensure that all participants in the payments ecosystem follow consistent practices to protect consumers and maintain system integrity.

What is PCI DSS and how does it relate to card regulations?

PCI DSS, or Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, is a global security framework designed to protect cardholder data. Businesses which store, process, or transmit card data must comply with PCI DSS requirements, which include encryption, access controls, and regular security testing.

Who enforces card regulations?

Card schemes such as Visa and Mastercard define and enforce many operational rules. Regulatory bodies and governments also impose legal requirements depending on jurisdiction. Compliance is often monitored through audits and certification processes.

Why are card regulations important?

They reduce fraud, protect sensitive financial data, and ensure trust in the payments system. Without regulation, inconsistent practices would increase security risks and undermine confidence in electronic payments.

What happens if a business does not comply with card regulations?

Non compliance can lead to fines, increased transaction fees, loss of ability to process payments, and reputational damage. In serious cases, businesses may be removed from card networks.
