Card Payments

What are card payments?

Card payments refer to transactions completed using debit cards, credit cards, or prepaid cards. These payments occur either in person through POS terminals or remotely through online or phone transactions.

How do card payments work?

A customer presents card details to a merchant. The merchant sends the transaction request through a payment processor and acquiring bank to the card network. The issuing bank approves or declines the transaction based on available funds and security checks.

What types of card payments exist?

Card payments occur in several forms.

• In store POS payments

• Contactless payments

• Online payments

• Phone or mail order payments

Are card payments secure?

Modern card payments use EMV chips, encryption systems, tokenization, and fraud monitoring networks. These security measures reduce fraud risks across the global card network.

Why do businesses accept card payments?

Card payments offer convenience for consumers and support higher transaction values compared with cash payments. Electronic processing also simplifies accounting and reporting for businesses.
