Minimum Monthly Fee

What is a minimum monthly fee in payments?

A minimum monthly fee is a charge applied when a merchant’s total processing fees do not reach a predefined threshold within a billing period. It ensures the payment provider receives a baseline level of revenue from the account.

Why do payment providers charge minimum monthly fees?

Providers incur fixed costs to support each merchant, including infrastructure, compliance, and customer support. The minimum fee guarantees these costs are covered even if transaction volume is low.

How is the minimum monthly fee calculated?

If a merchant’s total fees for the month fall below the agreed minimum, the provider charges the difference. For example, if the minimum is 50 and the merchant only generates 30 in fees, an additional 20 is charged.

Which businesses are most affected by this fee?

Low volume or seasonal businesses are most affected because they may not consistently meet the threshold. High volume merchants rarely notice this fee because their processing activity exceeds the minimum.

How can merchants avoid minimum monthly fees?

They can choose providers without minimum requirements, increase transaction volume, or negotiate contract terms during onboarding.
